Organising a meeting

Two days before the walk we set up a meeting to give information to the girls that wanted to go. I don't think boys wanted to go because they're lazy.. shh. There was a group of 10 that came.

Walk against slavery!!

On Wednesday the 29th of November, A group of us did a walk against slavery. We were wearing mostly black and holding signs from Hornby High School to Westfield Mall in Riccarton and back. It took us three hours! THREE!! At the end we had sore feet and were hot even though it was an overcast. During the walk we got a lot of honks from passing cars and thumbs up even some encouraging words from passing pedestrians. We were even able to walk through the mall getting stares. And somehow it took us a week to make 4 posters.. Whoops. And only ONE looked good! There was only one mishap were a man passing in a car pulled the finger at us.. But other then that every thing was good! We had a great day and returned to school with pride.

PBL

"Gender inequality is not a woman's issue, it is a human issue. It affects us all."

'Hokay' is our group name. In my group is Kashaye Une, Tyrepa Akeimo and myself. We have chosen gender issues as our topic. Since gender inequality is a big problem globally we think we can help the situation even by the tiniest bit. For our research we used these websites;

Website Name
Link
Date we accessed site
United Nations
13/11
IDLO
13/11
TGPGI
15/11
Peace corps
15/11
RGI
15/11

We then had to answer some questions about our topic;
Who is affected; Everyone globally is affected by gender inequality.
What are the issues; Men get more of everything than women but men are also affected by gender inequality sometimes.
When did this start; When Europeans started enslaving women.
Where is this happening; It happens more in poor countries. Families selling of their children for money.
Why is this happening; This is happening because its been put in our heads that men are better because they're stronger and are meant to be dominating.

Then we had to make an action plan to help our situation;
Since its hard for us to actually help the women affected by this we are planning on making posters and pamphlets about gender inequality and posting them around school plus putting them up around our community.

PBL

I think it will be a good project for us to do. Y'know helping the world even by just a little. And its good that the teachers have a tighter system than market enterprise earlier in the year. That means all students will have done something.

The creation of Earth

Story: The creation
Outline:
  • Ranginui and Papatuanuku are close together with their sons between them.Image result for papatuanuku and ranginuiImage result for papatuanuku and ranginui
The dark void was where they were. Where they existed. Where they lived but it was because they’re parents were happy. Enjoying each other’s embrace. So close together that their children were stuck between them. Tanemahuta, Tangaroa, Tawhirimatea, Tumatauenga were stranded in the void. The children only wished to see some light. Something bright in the darkness.

  • The sons are sick of the darkness void.
Centuries past (they think) and slowly they were started to get irritated. Annoyed. They wanted to be released. They cried out to their parents to split apart so they could see light but their parents refused their pleas. So they started mustering up a plan to split them apart one way or another. Unknowingly upsetting one of their siblings.

  • Except for Tawhirimatea.
A certain siblings anger grew as he heard their plans. His name was Tawhirimatea, god of the winds. So in his rage he threw all his feelings of hatred, betrayal and more into words and made sure they heard him. Things like “THEY MADE YOU!!” and “HOW DARE YOU BETRAY OUR PARENTS LIKE THAT!!” or “I’M ASHAMED TO CALL YOU MY BROTHERS!!!”. Which instantly made the brothers incredibly guilty but nothing was changing their minds and  from then on Tawhirimatea had no input to their plan and lurked at the back seething in hatred.

  • Tanemahuta ended up pushing them apart creating light.
  • Image result for papatuanuku and ranginui
They all had their turns trying to push their parents apart but coming back unsuccessful. Until it came to Tanemahutas turn. He grounded his elbows into his mother then put his feet on his father above. Then started pushing with everything he had then they started feeling a change. With one final push Ranginui, their father, was pushed far away from his lover, Papatuanuku. Then light flooded the gods senses. They blinked in awe at the sunlight. The grass. The trees. They all thought it was a beautiful miracle except for one who was weeping at his parents calls of pain and agony.

  • Tawhirimatea was enraged and fought them for his parents.

So through the centuries Tawhirimatea fought for his parents with his winds. Creating storms. Trying to break down his brothers children. The sea creatures. The trees and plants. Everything. Just for his parents who have been crying for their lovers absence. Ranginuis cries were shown by his tears which were known as ‘rain’ to humans. Letting his agony be known to his lost love.

Reading

The name of the journal I read was called 'Looking cool'. It was published in 2006 by Learning media, Wellington.

The name of the story I read was named 'Tattoo'. The story was written by Helen Frances.

This story is based around a woman named Jolene Tempest. Its about her recommendation on tattoos and her some of her life.

this story reminds me of a T.V programme where this lady roams the world looking at different cultures involving tattoos.

Reading

The name of the journal that I read was a Kapa Haka Diary. This Journal was released in the 2000 and it was published by Learning Media, Wellington.

The whole book is a diary of a kids journey through their Kapa Haka experience. It was written by Shirley Cormack. The story talks about someones Kapa Haka group and their mentors.

This story reminds me of my Kapa Haka groups in Primary and intermediate. I think this is a good story but it could use a bit more text.

The Difference Between Formal And Informal Rules

Formal:

Formal is something like when it is mandatory and respectful to others. Like when you are at a workplace you are expected to wear a certain uniform and act a certain way to customers.

Informal:

Informal means like something that you can use / be when away from colleagues. Like when you are at home you can wear whatever you like and do whatever you desire.

Jingle

A jingle is a small rhyme, miniature song, to advertise for a product.

To make a good jingle you must make a catchy, annoying, tune.

Market

Overall the event was cool to see what the other students came up with. My favourite stall was Fobilicious.

One thing I liked was the prices on products yesterday. Like I ain't surprised if I get diabetes because there was a stall that had pancakes with a huge knife full of Nutella, Heaps of chocolate chips and powdered sugar. And they sold that for 50c!!!

One thing I disliked was the rubbish left over after the market. There were so many plastic bags, cans, cups.. etc left on the floor!! It took ages just to clean up one corner!!

My group was pretty good. There was always someone by the stall and we sold out in the first 30 minutes.

My product was correctly priced, I know this because people didn't mind the price because they wanted  the slime and it wasn't too dear.

We made not enough of our product because we could of sold way more.

Next year I think the organisers should sort out more time for us to prepare in like the last week.

Know your rights

The know your rights fact sheet is at the very bottom of this page

It is important to know your rights in case of someone deceiving you. Because they could be charging you for something that you didn't do and you could be giving in when you don't need to follow on with the charges. For example; someone could be selling you a table but really it might be a miniature table when you wanted a big one. So that's why you should know your rights as a consumer or producer.

Maths Reflection

1. What were the main mathematical concepts or ideas that you learned or that were discussed in class?

Geometry History: I learned that M .C Escher made his drawings from concepts in mathematics and that Pythagoras made his own concept because he proved a theory someone else had and claimed it has his and named it the Pythagoras Theorem. And the Egyptians had different methods of mathematics.

Angles: I learned about angles on a straight line, around a point and much more.

2. What questions do you still have about Geometry history?

Of course there are other famous mathematicians in the world but who were / are the most important?

3. What new vocabulary words or terms were introduced?

Cant remember to be honest.

How to make a balancing toy.

Part 1: Making the base
    1. Saw off 100 mm off of a steel rod and clean it up with a file and sandpaper.  Then rub on some engineers blue on one side.
    2. Mark off a straight line in the middle of the base then on both sides mark in 20 mm and 10 mm.
    3. Then centre punch the markings you made and drill them. Using some safety glasses.
    4. Next you use the counter sect drill. On one side you counter sect the outer holes while on the other side you do the interior holes. Use safety glasses.
    5. Now saw off 2 80 mm steel rods. And do a quick clean up on your rods with sandpaper and a file.
    6. Scrub away the engineers blue on your base using a file and sandpaper.
    7. Now you weld the rod into the interior holes.
    8. Now you clean up the holes where you welded.
Part 2: Making the balance
    1. You saw off 80 mm off some flat steel. And then clean up the saw markings.
    2. Next you can make a shape for your balance but most of the weight has to be at the bottom because then it wont work like you want it to. Rub some engineers blue on.
    3. Draw your shape on a paper that fits your steel then glue the paper to the metal.
    4. Then use a ban saw or hacksaw to cut out your shape.
    5. File the edges to get rid of the saw markings.
    6. Now at the top of your balance where it will be hanging from cut a tiny bit of metal out about smaller than 5 mm and about the same size deep.
    7. Now cut about 50 mm off of a steel rod and file sides.
    8. Weld the steel rod into the hole in the balance then clean it up.
Part 3: Wiring
    1. Create a design of your own for the wiring. Just make sure most of the weight is on the bottom because if it is at the top then it will fall right off as the weight on both sides will be uneven.
    2. I suggest testing out on some scrap wire before actually doing the design.
    3. Weld all loose ends then weld to the top of the rod that's holding the balance.
    4. OPTIONAL: You could spray paint all of it to make it look more appealing. Just make sure you clean it properly and do the spray painting in an open area to prevent inhaling it.
Part 4: Weight for base
    1. First cut off some wood that's some what heavy. Make sure it fits your base before cutting it with a hand saw. You can shape it all you like just keep the middle perfect for the base to fit.
    2. When your finished shaping put your base where you want it then mark out where the holes are going to be.
    3. Next you Drill the holes. Make sure they are going straight down.
    4. Place the base over the holes then place the screws in and force them down with a screwdriver.
AND WALLA~ YOU ARE FINISHED YOUR BALANCING TOY !!
ENJOY!!

Novel

The invention of Hugo Cabret
Brian Selznick
Scholastic
2007

This story is about an orphan who starts repairing a robot believing it will give him a purpose in life.
1931 in Paris, France.
The main characters are Hugo Cabret and Isabelle
I like this novel because it has a cool story line.

Hugo is a very angsty and nervous young boy but he has his mind set one one thing. Fixing the automaton. And hes so driven that he would do anything to achieve it. I mean he steals to still live so stealing is a normal everyday thing. Hes been fixing the kinks and rough patches in it but then a new obstacle makes itself known. And that is a young girl and her surrogate god father that own the toy shop in the train station.

Film Shots.

Technique:
Definition and why it is used:
Example:
Establishing Shot
It is generally a long or extreme-long shot at the beginning of a scene indicating where, and sometimes when, the remainder of the scene takes place.
Extreme Long Shot
An extreme long shot is a view from an even greater distance, in which people appear as small dots in the landscape if at all (eg. a shot of New York's skyline).
Long Shot
In film, a view of a scene that is shot from a considerable distance, so that people appear as indistinct shapes.
Mid Shot
a shot taken at a medium distance.
Close Up
A close-up or closeup in filmmaking, television production, still photography and the comic strip medium is a type of shot, which tightly frames a person or an object.
Extreme Close
Up
The shot is so tight that only a detail of the subject, such as someone's eyes, can be seen.
POV Shot
A point of view shot (also known as POV shot, First-person shot or a subjective camera) is a short film scene that shows what a character (the subject) is looking at (represented through the camera).
Over The Shoulder Shot
In film or video, an over the shoulder shot (also over shoulder, ab tu, OTS, or third-person shot) is a shot of someone or something taken from the perspective or camera angle from the shoulder of another person.
Birds Eye View
A bird's-eye view is an elevated view of an object from above, with a perspective as though the observer were a bird, often used in the making of blueprints, floor plans and maps. It can be an aerial photograph, but also a drawing.
Low Shot
In cinematography, a low-angle shot, is a shot from a camera angle positioned low on the vertical axis, anywhere below the eye line, looking up.
High Angle
A high-angle shot is a cinematic technique where the camera looks down on the subject from a high angle and the point of focus often gets "swallowed up."
Tracking
A tracking shot is any shot where the camera moves alongside the object(s) it is recording.
Panning
1. to photograph or televise while rotating a camera on its vertical or horizontal axis in order to keep a moving person or object in view or allow the film to record a panorama : to pan from one end of the playing field to the other during the opening of the football game.
Zoom
Zooming in filmmaking and television production refers to the technique of changing the focal length of a zoom lens (and hence the angle of view) during a shot – this technique is also called a zoom. ... Combined with a dolly camera move it is possible to create the dolly zoom effect.
Fade
In the post-production process of film editing and video editing, a dissolve is a gradual transition from one image to another. The terms fade-out (also called fade to black) and fade-in are used to describe a transition to and from a blank image.
Wipe
A wipe is a type of film transition where one shotreplaces another by travelling from one side of the frame to another or with a special shape.
