Sost term 1 revision.

In Social studies this term we have gone over subjects revolving around slavery and human rights. I learned about a boy named Iqbal, who escaped his slave master and became a symbol of freedom to slaves. He spoke words of wisdom and fought in a 'resistance', if you will.  But of course there was many people who disagreed and spat upon the freedom of slaves, so because of that he was murdered.

I learned about Christopher Columbus, who started the Atlantic slave trade. He stumbled upon the Caribbean in 1492 when he was trying to find a quicker way from Spain to India. Because of this discovery he found the native, Arawak people and decided to enslave them to mine the gold and silver from their lands. To enslave them he took men to the Caribbean and beat or killed them into submission. This was named the 'Taino Genocide'. He also started the slave trade triangle. Columbus was a hero to some countries but was a murderer in others.

I also learned about Harriett Tubman, a woman who rescued and escorted slaves to a free country where they could be free. She was a very courageous woman and still helped her people until she died.

Around most of the historic events we covered, we also contributed where human rights can be included into it. And how slaves were ripped of their human rights. I learnt a lot this term and hope to get as much as I can out of social studies this year.
