Volcanoes

Volcanoes form when a convergent boundary, which is the boundary of a tectonic plate, is pushed up creating the mountain like shape of a volcano and the magma from the mantle comes up. This is the lava that comes out of the volcano causing a pyroclastic flow. Here is an example of a famous, ancient volcano.
Mount Vesuvius.

Vesuvius volcano is the only active volcano in the main lands of Europe. Its on the West coast of Italy, overlooking the Bay and the city of Naples. It is a volcano made up of alternate layers of lava and ash which is named a Strato-volcano.The last eruption it has had was in 1944, where even now it stands a great danger to the surrounding cities, especially the city of the Naples.
Plate tectonics of Mount Vesuvius

As you can see mount Vesuvius is right above a subduction zone formed by how the African plate descends beneath the Eurasian plate. Magma produced by the melting African plate creates the large and destructive volcano named Vesuvius.

This image is some victims of the 79 A.D eruption. From the devastating eruption of Pompeii. This eruption is recorded as one of the most destructive eruptions in history. They were covered in the Ash cloud because they had no where to run. This eruption may have killed over 16,000 people.

Vesuvius is the only recorded volcano to erupt, in Europe, in the last 100 years. It is regarded as the most dangerous volcano because of the mass of civilians surrounding it. Approximately 3 million people.

The last eruption was in March 1944 which destroyed the villages of San Sebastiano al Vesuvio, Massa di Somma, Ottaviano and part of San Giorgi a Cremano. Pyroclastic flows appeared within the rim which were followed by small explosions until the major explosion happened on March 28th. The tephra and ash damaged Pompeii's airfield which damaged an estimate of 88 aircraft. The massive eruption could be seen from the Naples.

Cool Facts about Volcanoes!

The word 'Volcano' comes from the Roman name "Vulcan" which is the Roman god of fire.

350 million, or one in 20 people in the world live within “danger range” of an active volcano.

The world’s largest active volcano is Mauna Loa in Hawaii standing at 4,169m.

The “Ring of Fire”, a 40,000 km Horseshoe shaped area of the Pacific Ocean, is home to 90% of all volcanoes on the Earth.

In 1883 Krakatau in Southeast Asia erupted, releasing 200 megatrons of energy, the equivalent of 15,000 nuclear bombs. This generated the loudest sound reported in history.
