DNA Extraction

In Science we got offered to design an experiment. The experiment was to be based around DNA and how you can extract it.

Extract DNA from a Strawberry:

AIM:
The purpose of this experiment is to find the DNA of a strawberry. Strawberries are easy to manipulate and contain a large amount of genome. Strawberries have an octoploid genome, meaning the nucleus has eight copies of each chromosome. In saying that the chromosomes located in the nucleus allows us to extract the DNA inside of it.

Using the alcohol extraction method, to find the DNA, will make it visible to the naked eye.
Add water, dish soap and salt to create the mixture to help break down the cells wall is the strawberry. Then add the strawberry is to a plastic bag, then add the wet solution to it. Remove as mush air as you can and then start compressing it. Do that until there are no big pieces. Using a strainer will help separate the liquids from the solids. Using a spoon press to gently to extract any liquid left. Transfer that solution to a smaller beaker and add iced Isopropyl alcohol. The DNA will then be visible in the layer of Isopropyl alcohol.

EQUIPMENT:
Dish soap - 10ml
Beaker(small), Test tube
Plastic Bag
Strainer
Tweezers
Strawberries - one or two
Measuring Cups/Spoons
Salt - 1/4 Tsp
Isopropyl Alcohol - 5ml
Water - 90ml

RESULT:
We ended up finding strands from a banana
