Portfolio exemplar changes



  • I think each image next to each other has a noticeable link and the final image shows skills in painting.
  • A noticeable motif in each image is either a change in food chain with animals being of more dominance than humans or the reality of humans suppressing animals for entertainment purposes. 
  • The colouring seems experimental at the start and develops into a more controlled colour scheme and eventually, it naturally flows into the next.

Week 2 Term 3 Visual Art

My kaupapa for this year is spiritual/cultural development. 

These are my concepts and I took inspiration from each of my artist models. Because 2 of them (Saul Bass and Luba Lukova) are very simplistic, minimalistic but effective orientated I didn't make my concepts TOO complicated and made sure to stick with my chosen colour theme. The blue flames represent 'Mahuika' who is a Maori fire diety and this is a reference back to my kaupapa. I thought the bottom in the middle line of concepts was effective and chose to develop more on that. The yellow ochre creates a nice contrast and because it is a complimentary colour of the navy I used it looks very nice.



I created primary, secondary and sub mark logos to show the variety of ways my logo could be presented instead of just a final concept. Showing variety of logo use will be good for future clients.

Art progress


This is my logo progress over the weeks. I think complimenting the blue with a yellow ochre looks very effective. I take a liking to the bottom right design and might use it for my final concept with some developments. I have put these concepts together after getting use to Adobe Illustrator. We learnt how to use the tools; gradient, text warp, image in text and the design principals. These are my practise pages of each technique.





With these techniques we were issued with a task to do a typography poster for based off a song from a list. From this list I picked, 'Sweet child o' mine' - Guns N' Roses. We dissected the song on what we could use for our poster.
Then we got to creating! Here is my final outcome.

Lockdown work

Kia ora, this is the work I have been doing during lockdown. I have been developing logos for my portfolio. With Mrs Clemence being my guide I have realised I need to add my more logos based on my chosen artist models, Saul Bass and Luba Lukova. (I borrowed their works as a researching topic in a slide on my blog). I am still currently developing them. During the 7 week lockdown I also finished my research assessment 2.1.

Planning introduction sector


I have started planning the layout of my first board. I have put the board in sections that will hold different products ideas. The top section is like the introduction stage where I introduce my why and kaupapa with a brief and show a mood board where I will reference my designs from. The image on the left is a full page of my 'first board' and the one below is an enlarged image of my introduction sector. It includes my mood board where I've labelled all the boxes and put a rough sketch of what it is. What I must remember is to refer back to my artist models when I am starting my designs. I am currently in the process of finishing my mood board on Adobe Illustrator since I am finished writing out my design brief.

Development 2

This week I have produced brainstorms on my why and a logo mood board. Here is my logo mood board which helped me a lot on understanding why the designers made their logos the way they did:
This board gave me a deeper understanding of what is going to be developed during the year. The mindset of a designer! Next, I have created a design brief concerning what my brand or business is, the purpose and who my target audience is. It is my final decision for my design outline. I want to produce a design workplace that shares innovative experience through art and unifies many people. My target audience would be teenagers and up with no limit of age because art is a thing that can be enjoyed and experienced by everyone.
And then I started thinking of my brand name which came down to Hine-nui-te-po ARTS or Mahuika Creatives. Personally, I think Mahuika creatives are better suited for it. I've already thought of the fonts as well and want the 2nd word of the name to be as a rough calligraphy stroke for it to be seen as art-related.

Character strength

My main character strength is Humour.

How do you initiate playfulness, and how does that change from situation to situation?
My playfulness is in the form of jokes. I initiate playfulness when I feel like it is necessary and is going to make both parties feel good. Sometimes I overstep the boundary where it is almost insulting them which I feel really sad when I realise. When I do, I try my best to show I am sorry to the other person. Depending on the situation whether it is friendly banter or a serious chat, I tend to help the other person see the brighter side since I am not a person that is good with giving advice.

How do other people you know express playfulness? What can you learn from observing playfulness in others?
My mates usually share inside jokes to show playfulness. I can learn that almost every person has a side of humour to them. It is just expressed in many ways.

In what situations has humour been a barrier for you in connecting with others?
Sometimes what I find funny isn't what other people think is funny. Some people only laugh cause I usually laugh but I feel like they don't really find it funny.

Development

My Visual Arts course this year will be focussed on design. I've been in Art for as long as I can remember and now I am going into a new type of art which I am very excited to get underway.  I think design will be a bit of a challenge for me since I am just getting into the use of digital media for artworks. My kaupapa this year is based on spiritual/cultural development. I love representing Maori culture in my art and wish to do something based on it again this year. My culture is central to who I am.

I have gone through the artists in my theme from the matrix on Ako and created my mood board here:

From my mood board, I have decided on Alfonse Mucha , Sagmeister and Walsh and Maui Studios. as my artist models for 2.1/ These artists will also help me get started with 2.2 which is also going to be the start of my folio.

These brainstorms are based on random ideas of what my potential subject matter could be and what they represent. The other is based on my chosen theme which is spiritual/cultural development and how I could possibly show it.

Pathways TAXATION 1 3/2

-Taxation-
What is Tax?
Tax is a compulsory contribution to the government from your working income.

What is PAYE? (Pay as you earn)
PAYE is a withholding tax on income payments to employees.

What is RWT? (Residents withholding tax)
RWT is a tax that is deducted from the interest that you, as a New Zealand resident, earn from BNZ.

What is Provisional tax?
Provisional tax is a way of paying your income tax as the income is received through the year.

What is Terminal tax?
Terminal tax is the difference between what tax has been paid during the year and what is actually owed.

Pathways 3/2

-Goals-
1.  What are 3 of my goals for this year?
a) Get my learners.
        -Finish a lot of practice tests.
        -Be confident and patient in the ACTUAL test.

b) Volunteer work at Ariki Creative.
        -Communicate with Ariki about student or work opportunities.

c) Be organised and don't slack on assessments.
        -Keep on top of deadlines.
        -Study at home (especially Calculus).

2.   What career pathway are you interested in?
I want to become an employee at Ariki Creative. In order to do so, I must attend courses/tertiary education related to art and design. I must come up with a portfolio consisting of skill within anatomy and landscape, a knowledge of how to use digital programmes like Adobe Illustration and Photoshop, and an understanding of te reo/ Maori culture.

3.   Happy vs Money?
Ariki Creative is my dream job. There is an average pay and I want to do it because I love designing. They come up with Maori design work for companies nationwide and highway 1.
