Montserrat presentation

Extreme Natural Event:
Partner: Kashaye

My experience throughout this whole topic has been a bumpy road. We watched alot of videos and we have also been given multiple lessons on paragraph writing. Given the headstart, we started a research of our own with a question to answer. To tell you the least, we struggled the first couple of weeks. A lot of the questions we understood, but the rest didn't make sense in any way or form. We had some ups and downs. One of them is that we almost lost our slideshow. Well, that's all for now.

Hurricane paragraph writing.

When there is a large body of ocean that is above the temperature of 26.5°C, a fierce storm forms, which may be a hurricane. Significantly, the very warm temperature of the ocean is what’s needed to start it. When it is over the sea or on coastal towns it is very lethal but as it advances inland it diminishes because the fuel is the tropical oceans. Storm surges, inland flooding and severe winds (up to 270 kph) are the more critical outcomes of the fatal storm. Destroyed buildings, devastated businesses, casualties, and a large loss of jobs could be the result of a hurricane

We are learning to write informational paragraphs in a more complex way. In ways we should in NCEA level 1. This should help us for next year with exams. We are using different types of sentence starters to make it more interesting and less bland.

What makes a home earthquake proof?

These are a list of things that make a home earthquake proof:
  • External walls are 6 inches thick.
  • Steel bars on the inside of walls.
  • Reinforced concrete as the foundation.
  • Hard soil under the home.
  • Steel bars in the roof.
Outcome of our earthquake proof house:
It was not successful because it didn't have a flat base because by the time I started it I didn't have the resources I needed. Architects make deep foundations to keep tall buildings stable.

Drypoint reflection.

The type of printmaking technique that is used for dry points is from the Intaglio family, where an image is incised into a plate or sheet by a "needle" like sharp metal. The lines are produced by the burr thrown up at the sides of the incised lines, in addition to the depressions formed where the ink can leak into. They produce soft and heavy lines which also include thick and thin lines. You hold the needle like a pencil but of course since plexiglass is heavier and denser than paper you would have to apply more pressure. The angle of the needle determines the burr. Of course, the greater the pressure the greater the depression in the plexiglass. The lines with less depression and burr will be least likely to print. Tonal areas are built up by cross hatching or stippling (close dots). To wipe the excess ink off the plate you rub it with a old towel or multiple paper towels then wiping it with a tarlatan pad (folded in) in a circular motion. We use the edge of a cardboard square to swipe the ink on the plate. Don't use excess pressure so you can avoid damaging the burr. Lino block printmaking and dry point printmaking are similar in some context but of course have their differences. Stating the obvious, Lino block printmaking uses lino while dry point uses plexiglass to produce the product. Another difference is that the ink is engraved into the plexiglass while the rest on the surface is wiped off while using the lino block technique it is the opposite. Ink on the surface creates the image. The only similarity between the 2 are that incisors are used in both to create depressions in order to produce the print and ink is involved. I prefer to use dry point instead of lino block because it is a much easier option and brings out more fine detail in the needed image that you want to produce.

Persuasive writing

Breaking copyright to download music is not really a crime. Everyone listens to music and I bet the majority of the people who are, copyrighted the tracks off the internet. I think breaking copyright to download music is not really a crime. A lot of people copyright music because there are a lot of servers that make it easy for us to and if we were charged with copyright then a majority of young people would be charged. Also listening to music calms some people and controls their attitudes but a negative point is that the artists making the works also deserve to be paid.

It is very easy to download music to your phone. Using data when you don’t have wifi takes up a lot of gigabytes. I know an alternative for music is paying for Spotify, to listen offline, but some people either can’t be bothered or just can’t. For example, if Beyonce brought out this new banger that you absolutely love, listening to it whenever you can is extremely convenient. Therefore, downloading music shouldn’t be a crime since, for most people, music is a necessity in their everyday life.
Since you should be charged for copyright because of illegally downloading music tracks then most of the adolescence in schools would be charged. I know multiple people who download music through servers and they haven’t been charged yet for copyright so is it really a crime? A multitude of teenagers would be charged and wouldn’t be able to pay for the charge which leaves us at a major loss unless our parents pay for it or some of us have a job, which is hard to acquire these days considering that some of us may be too young for a job.

I know, whenever I listen to music I feel what I’m listening to. To expand on that I mean, listening to certain genres will make us feel, as in emotion wise, what is being said or played. For instance, if you were listening to Jocelyn Flores by xxxTentacion you would feel grief or sadness, or if you were listening to I like it by Cardi B, Bad bunny and J Balvin you would feel high in spirits and very active. Because I know I do! Other than that listening to music is beneficial for many people since it somewhat helps them with what they’re feeling and could be a coping mechanism for themselves.

But through all these positive points there is a negative and that is why copyrighting music online is actually illegal. It is because you are basically stealing the artist's product from them. How are they meant to get paid if everyone is not paying for their product? I still agree that downloading music isn’t really a crime but we, or I, still need to consider the hard-working artists that are creating our therapeutic harmonies.

Downloading music isn’t really a crime to me. All the easy access servers, the large mass of adolescence that could possibly be charged, and how therapeutic music is are my reasons for agreeing with this statement. But I still had to include that what we are doing is somewhat wrong, in the eyes of the world, but to us, it is immensely beneficial. Music is a big factor of this world and I don’t think that slice of the social world will ever die.

Volcanoes

Volcanoes form when a convergent boundary, which is the boundary of a tectonic plate, is pushed up creating the mountain like shape of a volcano and the magma from the mantle comes up. This is the lava that comes out of the volcano causing a pyroclastic flow. Here is an example of a famous, ancient volcano.
Mount Vesuvius.
Image result for vesuvius
Vesuvius volcano is the only active volcano in the main lands of Europe. Its on the West coast of Italy, overlooking the Bay and the city of Naples. It is a volcano made up of alternate layers of lava and ash which is named a Strato-volcano.The last eruption it has had was in 1944, where even now it stands a great danger to the surrounding cities, especially the city of the Naples.
Plate tectonics of Mount Vesuvius

As you can see mount Vesuvius is right above a subduction zone formed by how the African plate descends beneath the Eurasian plate. Magma produced by the melting African plate creates the large and destructive volcano named Vesuvius.

Garden of the Fugitives - plaster casts of people who died in the ashfall associated with the 79 A.D. Vesuvius eruption
This image is some victims of the 79 A.D eruption. From the devastating eruption of Pompeii. This eruption is recorded as one of the most destructive eruptions in history. They were covered in the Ash cloud because they had no where to run. This eruption may have killed over 16,000 people.

Vesuvius is the only recorded volcano to erupt, in Europe, in the last 100 years. It is regarded as the most dangerous volcano because of the mass of civilians surrounding it. Approximately 3 million people.

The last eruption was in March 1944 which destroyed the villages of San Sebastiano al Vesuvio, Massa di Somma, Ottaviano and part of San Giorgi a Cremano. Pyroclastic flows appeared within the rim which were followed by small explosions until the major explosion happened on March 28th. The tephra and ash damaged Pompeii's airfield which damaged an estimate of 88 aircraft. The massive eruption could be seen from the Naples.

Cool Facts about Volcanoes!

The word 'Volcano' comes from the Roman name "Vulcan" which is the Roman god of fire.

350 million, or one in 20 people in the world live within “danger range” of an active volcano.

The world’s largest active volcano is Mauna Loa in Hawaii standing at 4,169m.

The “Ring of Fire”, a 40,000 km Horseshoe shaped area of the Pacific Ocean, is home to 90% of all volcanoes on the Earth.

In 1883 Krakatau in Southeast Asia erupted, releasing 200 megatrons of energy, the equivalent of 15,000 nuclear bombs. This generated the loudest sound reported in history.

FAULTSPK

In this image, there is data about the number of Australians born overseas. The graph at the bottom of the image indicates all the key factors you need to know on how to do a graph.
'FAULTSPK'  is the acronym for all the key factors a graph needs. Frame, Axis, Units, Labels, Title, Scale, Plot, Key. This allows the person that is looking at the graph to see all the essential information clearly.

Persuasive Class Writing

I learnt more complex sentence starters. And I learnt how to use writing techniques which will have a more powerful effect. We did it as a class so we could communicate our ideas and make something better by collaborating with each other and Mr Aitken. I will try to speak up about my ideas in a sentence. Could we have used better sentences and made the writing more interesting?

We should value our senior citizens / Kaumatua more highly.

The old and frail may look uninteresting but ask them about random topics and they could tell you a book’s long speech about it. In New Zealand, we should value the older generation much higher than we do. They are wise, know ways of doing things that are better than the original way and some served our country in the World Wars.

Our senior citizens are very wise. They know how to sort problems because they have most probably already been through that certain predicament. You could go to them for either advice or even if you just want to learn about something. Like if you needed help with an issue you're having with your friend they could give you advice on how to resolve it if it’s really weighing on your mind that much. As I was saying, they are very knowledgeable.

They know how to do things that are a lot better than you originally do them. Usually, come out with better results too. Like how some families have family recipes which taste way better than how it’s supposed to be made. They are very convenient like that.

Some fought in the wars for us. Made our nation proud. They could have died for our country and us, as the future tamariki of Aotearoa, and we should praise them for their accomplishments. During the wars was a dangerous era to live in.

We should value senior citizens higher than we do now. they are very intelligent, very helpful and very courageous. Who knows? maybe one day you could enlighten your future generations on the dramatical events in your life.

PRICELESS STOLEN ART PIECE!!!!!

It is a self-portrait linocut print. It is a straight on print of my face leaning on my hand with my head at a bit of an angle. I look very bored and expressionless with no accessories on and my hair down one side of my face. The head occupies most of the right side it also fills most of the space. On the head and face, the cuts are all going one way except for the lower part where the cuts run down. My top lip is not cut as it is a shadow. My hair is covering the left part of my face. My head is laying on my hand and I have a hoodie on as you can see in the print from the sleeve. What you can't see is the left part of my face which is covered by shadows and from my neck down is all dark. On the upper part of my hand are bold cuts because that's where the light is really bright. I have no cuts on my top lip because since the top lip is curved in a bit light doesn't really hit it. there are cuts going straight up to mark the outline of my hair. Here is the product of my linocut.

Creative writing for Sost - Me as an immigrant.

Even though I have grown accustomed to my rubbish life here in London, I know I can have a healthier lifestyle. Living in a cramped home, with a limited supply of rations for us all, in unhealthy conditions isn't the best. I am hardly able to clean myself because of the bath water, it is always murky and dark. The unsanitary streets, where human waste is thrown on, are always smelly and unsightly. Never go out without shoes, or you will most probably walk in feces and urine. I hate living like this but I guess I have to get used to it for the rest of my life.

There are many reasons why I want to run away from this hell hole. The air in London is polluted. There are many diseases going around. Typhus, Typhoid, Cholera and more. They spread fast due to the poor living conditions we live in. It is overcrowded to the point where there are almost 3 families living in 1 apartment. There is also no running water.

Children are exploited through working to pay off debts for their family. As sad as it is, I was one of those children. Working in dangerous factories where there are many unsafe conditions for children aged from 5+. No safety gear, no supervision equals accidents or even fatalities.

As I made my daily trip, at the crack of dawn, to the factories, I wandered past a poster on a shop window. What it said made me interested. So interested I stopped, turned around and snatched the loosely hung poster into my rough hands. I scanned it a couple times to make sure I read it properly. It read 'International job offers. Ships leave at 6:00 tomorrow morning at the London docks. Emigrating from London to New Zealand. 1-month journey. Workers needed. 10-pound boat fare.' Filled with adrenaline I shoved the poster in my top and walked off like nothing happened. Almost with a skip in my step.

The whole day I was unusually chirpy and I noticed some others were as well. The posters were big news amongst us workers. It was talked about all day. The thought of leaving this place left me happy all day. Well as happy as I can manage, I haven't left quite yet. When I got home I greeted everyone with a smile and slipped my small savings into my dress. I have gathered 20 pounds over the past year. Of course, no one knows or it will go mysteriously missing. No one noticed my uncharacteristic attitude. No one does. It feels like I'm a ghost in this overpopulated apartment. Just another reason for me to leave. No one will notice my departure. That night I slept a dreamless sleep.

This time I left the apartment with my good pair of clothes on and a grin appearing on my mouth with every step I took. A little skip in my step while trying to avoid the small remains of feces. This time I didn't have a constant glare on my face. I was in a euphoric state. leaving this place gave me immeasurable joy.

I arrived at the busy docks, amongst the bustling crowd, trying to push my way through the mob. After I finally boarded the boat and paid my fare I sat up against a wall with other workers. I admired the blue ocean and the sun shining off the waves before closing my eyes in bliss and slumbered for awhile.

I awoke to the sun high in the sky and the seagulls chirping high above me. I couldn't get over the thought of me finally leaving that place. I took the opportunity as soon as it arrived. I was smiling until a frown settled upon my face. 'Why do I feel sudden regret and anguish?'. Maybe it's because I won't ever see the people I grew up with again.. Or that I definitely won't be able to find my little sister that went missing a couple years back... Suddenly regret filled my being. Almost fully encasing me in distress. Maybe I shouldn't have left. Maybe I should have found my sister first and left with her. Our parents died from a disease spread by contaminated water. I should have said a proper goodbye. What if I was wrong and my family at home will worry about me when I don't arrive home tonight. Why have I been so selfish... Look what a little thinking can do to you...

My thoughts were strangling me throughout the whole day, getting worse and worse as the second’s tick by. A constant shadow dawned my face until night fell and I finally lifted my head and gazed upon the twinkling stars high in the sky. Trying to once again convince me that everything will be okay. I think staring up at the night sky eased myself a bit before a hoarse voice called out to me. " O young maiden, as for why do the stars reflect off your tears?" My eyes wandered up and down the tall silhouette in front of me. "And why do you think you can inquire into my woes?" I lazily glared at the perfect smile directed towards me. He stretched before settling down next to me. "Because a young maiden like you shouldn't be looking so sad." He attempted to caress my hand but I snatched it away. "I can look after myself, sir. Thank you and good day." I pushed myself off the edge and walked away from the man who worried too much for a poor young worker.

As the weeks passed on my independence and confidence grew. My lost smile has come back. My laugh isn't as loud as it used to be though. That same man would occasionally wave and smile at me or start up a small conversation before I would walk off. Then one day someone started singing while we were sitting together which caused the rest of us to start humming or singing along. Then I joined in and we all laughed at the end. "You have a beautiful voice." Said a voice from behind me. I turned to see the same man from before. A couple of days ago I learned that his name was Collin. "Oh, that's rubbish Collin." I protested while crossing my arms over my chest. He just laughed and sung, "I'm not lying." I shoved him before walking off and smiling secretly to myself.

Over the week, we developed a great friendship. Then friendship grew into a relationship. A very tight bond we had. I was so caught up in us I didn't notice the diminishing time to our destination and before I knew it, we had arrived in New Zealand. We held hands as we approached the shore. I smiled wistfully into the sea spray wetting my face and to the beaming sun. It looks so beautiful here. All the greenery and snow-capped mountains. The chirp of the native birds. I look forward to my future here.

Hunting animals for sport should be banned.
Killing animals shouldn’t be for entertainment. Hunting animals for sport should be banned. It is animal cruelty, many people shouldn’t enjoy it and kids shouldn’t be exposed to the brutality of killing wild animals.

How cruel is it to kill animals for human enjoyment? It should be considered animal cruelty since you are forcing the animals into a sport where they eventually die. Even rodeos should be banned because they are tying up animals and using it for entertainment. Anything involving animal cruelty should be banned.

I find it weird how people can enjoy killing animals. How do they get joy out of shooting/stabbing a species? For example, duck shooters are happy after killing multiple ducks. It’s like dark humour, they find entertainment and excitement out of killing animals.

Many children go to rodeos and other events involving harming animals because they grow up around it. They grow up around either slaughtering animals or herding them up. For example, the child of a farmer. Children experiencing death could harm them, not physically, but emotionally.

Thinking of killing animals for a sport is delusional. Using it as entertainment is weird and people even enjoy it. Kids shouldn’t. Imagine if the sides were flipped and animals made it a sport to kill us? We wouldn’t enjoy it then would we.

Persuasive Writing

There are criminals crawling Aotearoa. New Zealand is not the safe country we like to think it is. There are gangs, robberies, attempted kidnappings and much more.

There are a lot of gangs in our ‘peaceful’ country. Gangs are the centre of criminal activity in New Zealand. For example, the rivalry between the ‘Mongrel Mob’ and the ‘Black Power’, drug trading and they are armed with weaponry. Gangs are a large threat to New Zealand.

Robberies are frequent as well. There are always gas stations or liquor store robberies on Police Ten 7. For example, there was a dairy robbed last week and the intruders were only taking cigarettes, probably because cigarettes are becoming high-priced. So robberies are occurring all the time.

Attempted kidnappings is a very touchy subject. Pedophiles have tried to take young children from their schools. Police have even increased their presence because of it. I have heard of failed kidnappings from around my local area and it worries me because of my little sister. Attempted kidnapping shouldn’t be a common thing in the newspapers.

As I was saying, New Zealand is not the safe country we like to think it is. The gangs, robberies and kidnapping should be warnings to us all, to look after ourselves whenever we're out. Who knows when something may happen to us.

Land yachts

Aim
To get the furtherest using the wind as your only accelerator.

Equipment
1 trolley
Cardboard
Paper (1 meter squared)
Cellotape
String
Scissors

My plan

A part of the cardboard will be rolled up like a tube and cello taped shut. it will then be cello taped to the trolley and just to stabilize it a bit more a string will be going from the top to all around the trolley. Then a half circle will be made of the cardboard to cello tape the top of the paper mast to it. 2 holes will be punctured into the middle of the hole, as small as possible so a string can go in and around the cardboard pole. If possible make another stabilizer (half circle) with the cardboard for the bottom.

Get it over the arch and go the furtherest away from it.

Research
The Bullnose
This plane is deceptively fast and stays aloft for quite a distance.

Fold the top right corner over to the left side, making a fold from the top of the paper to the bottom right corner.
  1. Unfold the paper and repeat for the left corner.
  2. Unfold the paper again and fold the top right corner over to meet the crease made from the first fold.
  3. Fold the left corner over to meet the crease from the second fold.
  4. Fold the top right edge over to meet the edge of the fold from step 3. Repeat for the other side.
  5. Fold the top edge down and towards you to meet the point where the right and left layers cross.
  6. Fold the plane in half away from you. Staring at the nose, fold the wings down at a slight angle, 1/2” in the front to about 2” in the back.
  7. Add double stick tape to the inside of the body. The finished plane should look like this.

Success in sports is all about winning

Cave Art Painting

What am I learning?
We are comparing modern technology to olden 'tech'. Like how cave men drew and the evolution of weapons and tools. From rocks to stone axes. Like nower days we have a wide variety of options on how to draw/ paint etc a masterpiece but then they used sticks and coloured liquids to draw on the environment around them.

How does this work show my learning?
It shows my learning because we actually made cave art, using their techniques. Its much easier using your hands.

What am I wondering?
How did they come up with the idea to draw their lives? How did they make the dye?

How can I use this learning?
I can use this learning to help me with future cave art drawings and by learning about cave art it has given me a better understanding on how cave men used it.

Mackenzie Poltergeist in Greyfriars

This is a very unusual topic about haunting's from a tormentor of 18,000 Presbyterian Covenant rebels who disobeyed the king. Sir George Mackenzie was appointed by the king to prosecute those that refused to swear allegiance to the king. So he tortured and imprisoned his prosecutors in a section of the Greyfriars courtyard, known as the Covenant's prison. His victims named him 'Bluidy Mackenzie'. For 300 years, both victims and tormentor rested in an uneasy peace, just feet from each other. And, then one dark and stormy night in 1998, a homeless man, possibly wanting shelter from the rain or looking for something valuable to steal, broke into the ‘Black Mausoleum’, a vaulted and well fortified tomb, the final resting place of the infamous ‘Bluidy MacKensie’. The vagrant ransacked the tomb, smashing caskets on every level until he came to one which held the body of Bluidy MacKensie himself. While trying to pry open the casket, a large hole opened up in the floor under his feet, dropping the man into a chamber below. The pit was filled with the remains of plague victims, dumped into the hole and covered over during plague days as a quick way to dispose of bodies. Confronted by the remains and stench of still rotting flesh, the homeless man ran screaming hysterically from the mausoleum into the night, never to be heard from again. The next day, another passerby looking through the iron gates of MacKenzie’s tomb was (in her own words) “blasted back off it’s steps by a cold force.” Sometime later, another woman was found near the tomb’s entrance lying unconscious and her neck covered with bruises as if someone had tried to choke the life from her. Once these stories of the macabre hit the internet, the legend of the Mackenzie Poltergeist in Greyfriars was born and lit up the area like wildfire attracting ghost hunters and macabre seekers from every corner of the earth. Since 1998, when Mackenzie’s casket was first defiled, over 500 ghostly attacks have been reported by those visiting the tomb, many of these injuries documented with photographs.Today, many people believe this graveyard is haunted by the Mackenzie Poltergeist, a malevolent spirit who’s hatred lives on from beyond the grave. Is Mackenzie causing havoc among those that try to disturb his final resting place?

Testing for Carbon Dioxide Gas

Aim: To show that carbon dioxide gas is produced when a metal carbonate reacts with acid
Equipment: Two boiling tubes, Delivery tube and bung, Bunsen burner, test tube rack, wooden splint, acid, metal carbonate, test tube tongs, safety glasses

Method:
  1. Light your Bunsen burner
  2. Ass a 'pea-sized' amount of metal carbonate into one of the boiling tubes.
  3. place the boiling tube into a test tube rack. Ensure you have the bung and delivery tube ready
  4. Add 5 mL of acid to the boiling tube and quickly insert the bung and delivery tube into the mouth of the boiling tube.
  5. Holding the other boiling tube with your tongs, capture the gas produced as shown in the diagram below.
  6. When you think the tube is full, your lab partner should light a wooden splint
  7. Carefully remove the boiling tube from under the delivery tube, taking care to keep it facing upright
  8. Insert the burning splint into the mouth of the test tube.
Observations:
We observed it becoming extinguished. CO2 was present as well. We did another experiment too. The outcome of this one was that the solution turned from colorless to cloudy. CO2 was present in this experiment as well

Making a Metal Oxide

Aim:
To make a metal oxide and observe the difference in properties of the product compared to the reactants.

Magnesium: (Mg)
Before burning it, it was a metallic lustre then when put over the Bunsen burner it turns into a bright white light.

Iron: (Fe)
Before burning it, it was a metallic lustre and then when put over the Bunsen burner it turned into black.

Copper: (Cu)
Before burning it, it was a bronze/brown colour and then when put over the Bunsen burner it turned into dark purple/black.

The equations:
Magnesium + Oxygen ---> Magnesium Oxide
Iron + Oxygen ---> Iron Oxide
Copper + Oxygen ---> Copper Oxide

I wonder if aliens exist.

From this website I learned that there have been unexplained sightings for centuries. From crop circles to skulls that are bulging on the head that were found on earth. Many UFO (Unidentified Flying Objects) have been seen over the centuries. I think some could be hoax though. Even in 'The Madonna with Saint Giovannino ', other wise known as the UFO painting, A man and his dog can be seen in the background staring at a flying disk. There are also cave painting that have indicated to alien existence. Many astronauts have recorded sightings as well. Buzz Aldrin, who was aboard the Apollo 11, recorded that he saw something flying next to them and he thought it was the final detachment until mission control confirmed it was 6000 miles away from them. Also Bill Clinton spoke continuously on the existence of aliens and speaking his opinions on the 'independence day'. So there is a lot of evidence leading up to it and I think alien existence could be a very high possible theory.

Now this makes me wonder if they will ever strike us and are just waiting for a prime opportunity.. ??

To show that hydrogen gas is produced when a metal reacts with acid.

Method:
1. Light your Bunsen burner.
2. Add your sample of metal to your test tube. Add 2 mL of acid.
3. Carefully invert the boiling tube above the test tube containing the metal and acid.
4. Hold the test tubes together for a few minutes, allowing time for the inverted boiling tube to fill with gas.
5. When you think the tube is full, your lab partner should light a wooden splint.
6. Carefully, but quickly, tilt the boiling tube full of gas upwards and insert the burning splint into the mouth of the test tube.

Observations:
When you insert the splint into the boiling tube it produced a high pitch noise and put the fire out.
I could tell a chemical reaction was occurring in the test tube because when you put the sample of metal (magnesium ribbon) in the hydrochloric acid it fizzed up and produced hydrogen.

Phone Addiction

Recently we've been looking at how technology has changed the way we do things.

Analysis has shown that young people specifically spend more time on their device. As a group, we interviewed a few people to see whether they were addicted to their phone. We surveyed a diversity of different personalities. Throughout the videos, each individual spoke about if they are addicted to their phone and how many hours they were on it. Majority confessed to being addicted to their devices and the number of hours they were consuming. Based on our little investigation we found out that the being addicted to your phone was common. We also observed that 3 out 5 people said that they wouldn't survive without their device.

Floating houses

I gaze at the flock of crows passing by. Then one lands on the window sill and we compete in a staring contest. Finally I win and the bird flies away to join the others. I stare after them while they disappear into the misty clouds. I’d rather look up then down. I can’t look upon the world we destroyed. The cracked concrete, the patches of earth, the boulders, the floating streams of murky water. Then the destruction.. The floating lifeless bodies and animals that died of suffocation. Even looking side-wards is annoying. Looking at the transcending roots connected to trees just floating there. We’ve lost all gravity and oxygen in our atmosphere. We should’ve known.. We would be our own destruction. No one’s ever gone to recover the bodies. Well there’s not much time anyways. I can feel myself start to try inhale as much air as possible. With no oxygen source I am slowly dying. But i’m okay. I'm proud of myself for shoving my wife and children into the last shuttle to safety. Apparently the government has made a space station for those that are lucky. They predicted it but didn’t warn us. They were screaming for me but at least they are okay. Everything will be alright. And with a tear and a smile my lungs collapsed and my heart stopped beating. At least I died in this house that I proposed to my wife in, watched my kids grow in, i’m fine with dying in this floating paradise.

Making Salts

Aim:
To produce sodium chloride salt by carrying out a neutralisation reaction.

Equipment:
50 mL and 200mL beakers, dilute HCI (hydrochloric acid), dilute NaOH (sodium hydroxide), 25mL measuring cylinder, a glass stirring rod, spotting tile, Universal indicator solution, tripod, gauze mat, Bunsen burner, evaporating basin.

Method:
1. Using the measuring cylinder measure 10 mL of HCI and pour it into your 50 mL beaker. Add dilute NaOH a few drops at a time while stirring with the glass rod.

2. Every 10-15 drops stop adding NaoH and use the glass stirring rod to transfer a drop of solution to a spotting tile. Test its pH using Universal indicator.

3. Keep adding NaOH and testing the solution by repeating step 2. As you get closer to neutral you may need to test the solution after every drop.

4. Pour the solution into an evaporating basin and evaporate the water out of the solution using the equipment set up.

Iqbals loss of human rights

Iqbal lost many of his human rights. One was the right of freedom. By being unable to freely walk or leave the workplaces. Because Iqbal was forced to work 12 hours a day and he couldn't leave the factory at all. Iqbal's loss of freedom was one of the many human rights he lost.

Another human right Iqbal lost was the right to education. By not being able to write or read. Like how Maria was the only slave that could read. It is very unfair that Iqbal's, and many others, right to education was taken from them.

One last human right Iqbal lost, even though there are more, was the freedom of expression. The workers couldn't express how they feel in fear of getting tortured or more. They couldn't express that they were tired, because of a long days work. or hungry, from only running on one meal at 4 or 5 in the morning. And then he had one last meal before bed that he hardly got nutrient's by. It is unfair that Iqbal and the others lost freedom of expression.

Sost term 1 revision.

In Social studies this term we have gone over subjects revolving around slavery and human rights. I learned about a boy named Iqbal, who escaped his slave master and became a symbol of freedom to slaves. He spoke words of wisdom and fought in a 'resistance', if you will.  But of course there was many people who disagreed and spat upon the freedom of slaves, so because of that he was murdered.

I learned about Christopher Columbus, who started the Atlantic slave trade. He stumbled upon the Caribbean in 1492 when he was trying to find a quicker way from Spain to India. Because of this discovery he found the native, Arawak people and decided to enslave them to mine the gold and silver from their lands. To enslave them he took men to the Caribbean and beat or killed them into submission. This was named the 'Taino Genocide'. He also started the slave trade triangle. Columbus was a hero to some countries but was a murderer in others.

I also learned about Harriett Tubman, a woman who rescued and escorted slaves to a free country where they could be free. She was a very courageous woman and still helped her people until she died.

Around most of the historic events we covered, we also contributed where human rights can be included into it. And how slaves were ripped of their human rights. I learnt a lot this term and hope to get as much as I can out of social studies this year.

Prompt; I didn’t mean to kill her.

“I didn’t mean to kill her..” His words were dragged out in sarcasm which made my blood boil. “Oh wait.. Yes I did! HAHAHA” His roaring laugh reminded me of the joker. Even his sadistic nature did. “I set up a little game for you Lieutenant..” Anger and little mix of fear filled my being. “It’s called ‘Find Susie’s body’.. ‘Pieces’. I think the game clarifies itself by its name. Don’t ya think Lieutenant?” My eyes grew wide in horror. He’s the most despicable and disgusting person i’ve had the displeasure of meeting. “Where is she?” I snarled into the device on my ear. “Oh.. Little bit everywhere. Y’know a toe here. A eyeball there. Really you won’t even know it’s her! Haha” His chuckle sent a shiver down my spine. Suddenly I felt like I was being watched causing the hairs at the back of my neck to prick. “Lieutenant your time’s coming soon. Don’t get jealous.”

I could sense them closing in. Their heavy footsteps and a waft of tobacco and alcohol filled my nostrils. I instantly went for my gun sitting in the back of my pants. And they advanced as soon as my hand went down. There were 3. One to the left, one to the right and one right in front. We were exchanging punches and kicks until I rammed one’s head into the alleyway wall. Knocking him out instantly. The other got mad and abit too cocky screaming that he was going to kill me until I shot him in the head and the other came to his senses and fled.

“Your lackeys have failed you again.” Silence was at the other end until. “Oh Lieutenant. Those weren’t mine. These ones are.” I instantly put my guard back up and heard the low hum of an idle car and the end of the alleyway. I went to dash the other way until I noticed another one. These ones had a different approach. They came one by one.

We started brawling until I put him in a choke hold and gripped the smooth metal of my gun and aimed it to his head. The others seeing this caused them to back away to their cars. I spoke into the earpiece “Call your men off or i’ll kill him. I know your watching.” I searched the walls and saw a little red light next to a cctv camera. The next words that he said disgusted me. “Kill him.” The man started trembling and said “But M-master?” “Don’t master me. You got yourself in that position it’s your fault.” I then pulled the trigger. And this time. They all ran towards me.

DNA Extraction

In Science we got offered to design an experiment. The experiment was to be based around DNA and how you can extract it.

Extract DNA from a Strawberry:

AIM:
The purpose of this experiment is to find the DNA of a strawberry. Strawberries are easy to manipulate and contain a large amount of genome. Strawberries have an octoploid genome, meaning the nucleus has eight copies of each chromosome. In saying that the chromosomes located in the nucleus allows us to extract the DNA inside of it.

Image result for dna of a strawberryMETHOD:
Using the alcohol extraction method, to find the DNA, will make it visible to the naked eye.
Add water, dish soap and salt to create the mixture to help break down the cells wall is the strawberry. Then add the strawberry is to a plastic bag, then add the wet solution to it. Remove as mush air as you can and then start compressing it. Do that until there are no big pieces. Using a strainer will help separate the liquids from the solids. Using a spoon press to gently to extract any liquid left. Transfer that solution to a smaller beaker and add iced Isopropyl alcohol. The DNA will then be visible in the layer of Isopropyl alcohol.

EQUIPMENT:
Dish soap - 10ml
Beaker(small), Test tube
Plastic Bag
Strainer
Tweezers
Strawberries - one or two
Measuring Cups/Spoons
Salt - 1/4 Tsp
Isopropyl Alcohol - 5ml
Water - 90ml

RESULT:
We ended up finding strands from a banana
